Groundbreaking eBus Fleet Electrification
South Yorkshire moves forward with eBus Fleet Electrification
Rotherham, South Yorkshire – South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority (SYMCA) has taken a significant step towards enabling electric buses to run, thanks to funding from the DfT Zero Emission Bus Regional Areas (ZEBRA) initiative. Installation of two 300kW pantograph chargers at Rotherham Interchange has begun, marking the start of an ambitious plan to provide fast, efficient charging.
Team work and partnerships
The project, managed by Kevin Broadley, aims to enhance the sustainability of public transport in the region. Kelly Reeves, serving as the Key Account Manager and part of the New Business team, is also a pivotal figure in the initiative. The Evolt Charging team has collaborated closely with engineering and consultancy firm Arup, appointed by SYMCA, and SDE, the installation partner, to ensure the project’s success.
Innovative technology
The pantograph solution featured in this project is notable for its compact and fully integrated design, which ensures a minimal footprint and low installation costs. This advanced technology is set to deliver rapid “top-up” charging capabilities, crucial for maintaining the efficiency and reliability of the new eBus fleet.
Additionally, SYMCA is implementing the in-house back-office solution from Evolt Charging. This innovative system will provide detailed, disaggregated bus usage data, facilitating the automatic transition of operational information and enabling accurate billing with bus operators.
Challenges and solutions
As the Principal Contractor, SYMCA has employed a comprehensive approach to the project, utilising a NEC4 contract for both the design and installation phases. One of the significant challenges addressed was accommodating new grid supply upgrades, through the use of directional core-drilling, which minimised the impact on the building’s structure. We’ll be sharing more on this process and progress soon.
The “go-live” phase of the project began earlier this month, with the first spade hitting the ground at the Rotherham Interchange. This marks a significant milestone in South Yorkshire’s journey towards a greener future, showcasing a strong commitment to sustainable transportation and innovation in public infrastructure.
The completion of this project will not only improve the efficiency and reliability of the public transport network but also contribute to reducing the region’s carbon footprint, aligning with broader environmental goals. As South Yorkshire continues to pave the way in green transport solutions, the region serves as a model for other areas looking to adopt sustainable practices in public transportation.
