Driving change in Merthyr: What’s next for the Award-Winning EV Fleet

As we pick back up with Ioan Vantu, Transport Manager for Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council, we now explore how the council is building on their EV Fleet successes, the lessons learned, and the plans that will guide their transition to a fully electric fleet in the years ahead.

The results

After three years of operation, the results speak for themselves:

“We’ve never had a situation where vehicles weren’t charged in the morning… most issues are resolved remotely, and if not, someone attends within 24 hours.”

The environmental impact is significant. More than 50 electric vehicles now avoid burning roughly 2,000 litres of diesel per year each. While electricity prices have fluctuated, the long-term financial savings alongside the CO₂ reduction are clear.

At first, not everyone was convinced. Some drivers resisted the switch, worried about charging or using new technology. Ioan’s approach was to get them behind the wheel:

“Once they used them for a few days, they preferred them to diesel… now most say they wouldn’t go back, and some are considering buying personal EVs.”

Looking ahead, Merthyr still has around 30 light goods vehicles and 40 HGVs to replace. The technology for heavy vehicles isn’t perfect yet, but Ioan is confident:

“Within the next five years, we’re hoping the technology will be available and by 2035, 100% will be fully electric.”

Other councils have already visited to learn from Merthyr’s example. Ioan is equally keen to learn from peers, especially those integrating renewables.

“We’re open to discussions… we share ideas and successes as well.”

It’s that collaborative spirit combined with early action, reliable partnerships, and a clear vision that earned Ioan and his team the Fleet and Workplace Charging Award.

As we mark 15 years of Evolt Charging, Ioan’s story is a reminder of what’s possible when commitment meets innovation.
